Philip W. Malakoff

Executive Managing Director and Director of Research. Member of FLI’s Investment Committee

Philip W. Malakoff

Philip joined FLI in 2007 and serves as Executive Managing Director and Director of Research. He is also a member of FLI’s Investment Committee, heads it Outside Manager Sub-Committee and has portfolio management responsibilities including being Co-Portfolio Manager of our internally managed hedged growth strategy.

As Director of Research he oversees FLI’s internal analysis of companies and industries, providing guidance and supervision to a team of analysts.  As head of the firm’s Outside Manager Sub-Committee he leads its evaluation process, including conducting interviews, analysis, and ongoing due diligence of FLI’s current and prospective managers.  Philip is the Co-Portfolio Manager of our hedged strategy and a member of the strategy sub-committee for FLI Core, a long-only equity strategy.  He has developed many of FLI’s internal analytic and valuation models.

Philip is an important member of FLI’s client relationship team and develops asset allocation recommendations for both new and existing clients.  For new clients, he works to understand their financial situation and goals as well as their current holdings and provides recommendations of how best to transition those assets to FLI’s various strategies (including in some cases a recommendation to maintain certain existing investments).  Philip has an expertise in working with clients to develop a global asset allocation, looking at holdings managed by FLI as well as the clients outside investments, to ensure that all investments are complimentary and provide the appropriate overall levels of exposure to various asset classes.

Prior to joining FLI, he provided equity and fixed income research, portfolio management and asset allocation services to clients of Westport Resources Management, Inc., a boutique brokerage and investment management firm. He was President and Chief Investment Officer of Metropolis Capital Management, a hedge fund, and held various positions in asset management and research at Ladenburg Thalmann & Co.  Philip began his career as a trader of derivative products for large financial institutions.

Philip is a member of the Board of Advisors at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. He previously served as the Secretary of the Board of Trustees and an Executive Committee Member of The Long Island Children’s Museum, as well as member of the Executive Committee of the Friends of the Israel Defense Force (FIDF), Long Island Division. He serves on the Board of Governors of Fresh Meadow Country Club.

Philip received a B.B.A. from Emory University and earned an M.B.A. in finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. When not in the office, you will most likely find Philip on a golf course, spinning, completing a New York Times crossword puzzle, or reading a mystery novel. Philip and his wife, Stacey, split time between Manhattan and the north shore of Long Island. They have two adult children.
